Applying to become a volunteer

The first thing you need to do is contact us and request an application pack or visit the Volunteering Opportunities page where you can
complete an online application form.

In the application we will ask you for the names and addresses of two referees. When the referees have returned their forms we will contact
you to arrange an interview. This is an opportunity for us to tell you what we do and how we do it and for you to tell us why you are interested in volunteering.

What will we do for you in return?

We will provide our volunteers with –

  • A comprehensive accredited training programme
  • The opportunity to learn new skills
  • Travelling expenses (met by the placement agencies)
  • Support and supervision, and much, much more

What commitment do you need to give?

Volunteers can give as much time as they wish. We only ask that you consider those who need your support and the continuity of care.
Many people do one or two days a week, or even more, and have been with us since we began!

Where can you volunteer?

We offer a range of opportunities through the agencies and organisations registered with us. Please refer to our Volunteer Opportunities page to learn more about the roles available to you.

What training will I get?

As a NewLink Wales volunteer you will receive 3 days of FREE training. Your block training will cover:

  • Substances commonly misused and their side effects
  • Patterns of use
  • Basic assessment techniques
  • The work of local agencies
  • Client work and good practice

As part of your ongoing commitment NewLink Wales will also provide free additional training once you have been in a volunteer placement for a minimum of one month.

This extra training covers areas such as -

  • Alcohol Awareness
  • Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
  • Boundaries and Professionalism

You will receive all the training and support necessary to become a volunteer in the field of substance misuse.

Please note – All potential volunteers who wish to access VOLocity will be assessed to ensure this type of volunteering within the substance misuse field is suitable for them. If however, the Volunteer Coordinator feels VOLocity is not right for you, we will do our best to refer you to another organisation who may have more suitable opportunities to meet your volunteering needs.
