linking volunteers to agencies, agencies to training and communities to services
The MILE Programme
What is MILE?
MILE stands for Mentoring in Learning and Education. This programme is the first of its kind in Wales and is specifically designed for ex-users who want to move from being a client of services to being a volunteer in services and ‘give something back’. The programme has been developed to harness the valuable experiences of ex-users and to provide support to those who need a little extra time or distance from their own personal history before becoming volunteers within placement agencies registered with NewLink Wales.
You also have the opportunity to complete a City and Guilds level 1 qualification in Employability and Personal Development Skills, the qualification runs alongside MILE subjects delivered within the programme. This can be discussed further at your assessment.
Are you...
An ex-service user who has something to give back, and committed to volunteering within the substance misuse field?
Do you want to...
- Learn new skills?
- Use your existing skills, knowledge and experience to support others?
- Make new friends?
- Build confidence?
The Programme
The MILE Programme will be tailored to meet individual needs offering group work, 1-2-1 sessions
and reviews to support and enable ex-service users to become volunteers through
NewLink Wales, as well as support from a group volunteer who has completed the programme.
The programme includes:
- Initial induction day
- Boundaries
- Confidentiality
- Self confidence and assertiveness
- Challenging behaviour
- Goal setting / pathway planning
- Volunteer Rights and Responsibilities
Plus other subjects to enable you to gain skills and knowledge to progress into volunteering within the substance misuse field, again this will be discussed further at your assessment.

"MILE was a great refresher on things that I wasn’t aware I knew, and helped build on what I did know. I feel so much more confident so would definitely recommend MILE to everyone."
"MILE is not only for volunteering or employment, but for your own confidence and self worth."
MILE has prepared me to start Volunteering, but most importantly it has given me the confidence to be able to work with others, I think MILE is brilliant and would definitely recommend it to others.
I think MILE was a great course which helped me so much with all areas in my life, and gave me a sense of hope that I can achieve things in life which I have not felt for a long time! I would like to truly thank MILE!
