Here’s the range of Qualifications we’re currently offering for practitioners in the substance misuse and wider health sectors.

This nationally recognised qualification enables you to demonstrate your competence against a range of national occupational standards.

You can receive the Diploma by achieving a minimum number of credits, gained through the completion of both mandatory and optional units. The optional units contain content on working with substance use, and they’re linked to the Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS).

The assessment is planned between you and your assessor, assessment takes place in your workplace. The qualification’s assessed using a range of methods; these can include observations, statements from witnesses, work products, self reflective accounts, written and oral questioning and professional discussions.

You’ll be registered with City & Guilds, and it’s generally the case that most people can complete the qualification within a year.

The cost includes registration, certification, all assessments and both internal and external verification.

Qualification Cost

£1300 per person, with a reduction if 5 or more individuals from the same organisation (working near each other) are enrolled together.

Awards & Certificates in Working with Substance Misuse

If you’re working in a specialist substance misuse service with adults or children and young people, or in any service where you have regular contact with substance users, then one of these qualifications may be what you’re looking for.

They can be used by as:

  • Continuous Professional Development if you already hold a relevant professional qualification, such as in nursing, social work, teaching, police work, or probation.
  • Continuous Professional Development if you already hold a relevant Level 3 NVQ, such as Health and Social Care or Working with Offending Behaviour
  • A specialist qualification, if you’re working in the field but can’t undertake a full Level 3 NVQ due to the nature of your work – for example, you could be a part time or voluntary worker.

There are four qualifications available:

  • Level 3 Award in Working with Substance Misuse
  • Level 3 Certificate in Working with Substance Misuse
  • Level 4 Award in Working with Substance Misuse
  • Level 4 Certificate in Working with Substance Misuse

The final qualification you gain is based on the selection of units relevant to your work role. Each unit has been assigned a level and credit value, and you can select from a choice of 33 available units.

You can gain the Award through the achievement of a minimum of 10 Credits, and the Certificate through the achievement of a minimum of 18 Credits.

A mix of units from Levels 3 and 4 can be used in the same qualification. However, for the qualification to be given a Level 4, at least 60% of your total credits must be from Level 4 units.

Your work will be assessed by an assessor, who’ll support and help you gather a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates your skills and knowledge in each of the units.

You’ll be assessed in your workplace whilst you are working directly with people who misuse substances, so the assessment will relate directly to your competence in the workplace.
