Auricular acupuncture (acupuncture of the ear) has long been used to assist support for people struggling with addiction. However, recent years have seen an increase in the treatment being used to aid with mental health and other emotional wellbeing issues, from post-traumatic stress to anger management and more.

We use the SMART UK auricular acupuncture formula treatment. SMART UK is the world’s leading provider for auricular acupuncture training for healthcare professionals working in substance misuse and mental health fields, and is a recognised trainer for the NHS and HM Prison Service.

Treatment by qualified staff

Our acupuncture treatment is carried out by staff members who have been qualified by SMART UK, following an intensive training course and subject to annual reassessment.

How it works

In brief, acupuncture needles stimulate nerves that have connections to parts of the brain that are related to substance misuse. Acupuncture aims to assist in restoring balanced brain chemistry.

Auricular acupuncture has been shown to have the following benefits:

  • Substance withdrawal symptoms may be reduced
  • Anxiety levels and stress may decrease
  • Sleep may improve
  • Panic attacks may be more manageable
  • You may feel generally calmer and more able to relax
  • Energy levels may increase
  • You may feel more stable and in control

Some questions you may have

What will happen when I come for treatment?

Nothing happens without your consent. On your first visit, you will be asked to provide written consent for a course of treatment. Thereafter verbal consent can be given

The practitioner will check the shape of your ears to determine where needles will be placed – just like fingerprints, everyone’s ears are different. You’ll then be given a wipe to clean your ears before treatment begins.

The practitioner will then insert needles, one at a time. You’ll be asked to breathe in, then out; needles are inserted on the ‘breathe out’.

Once the needles are in, you will sit or lie quietly for 40 minutes. After 40 minutes, the needles will be removed.

Will it hurt?

The needles used are extremely fine and designed especially for this treatment. However, sometimes it will pinch a little. You’ll be encouraged to concentrate on your breathing – this will help.

Will I bleed?

You will not bleed when the needles go in – you may bleed a little when the needles are removed, but that’s entirely normal and not something that should worry you.

If you are interested in having this treatment, our Bridgend staff are always happy to discuss the process with you, and our trained practitioners will be able to answer any questions you may have. Remember – there’s no such thing as a stupid question, just questions!
