Course Overview:

This is a two-day course.

This popular evidence-based approach has been informing the work of a wide variety of practitioners in health and social care fields for around 30 years.

‘MI’ as it is known, is a style of communication that can be used in a wide variety of situations, from brief initial contact with people through to in-depth work with individuals and families. It has also been used in contexts where it is combined with the use of authority, such as work in legal settings or child protection type work.

Cost: Free (fully funded)

Refreshments will be provided. Lunch will NOT be provided. There is also free parking at the rear of the building.

The course content includes:

  • Understanding the ‘spirit’ of the approach
  • Building intrinsic motivation/understanding self-determination theory
  • Assessing readiness for change
  • Using your ‘OARS’ – The skills of MI
  • Working with ambivalence
  • Building ‘Change-Talk’
  • Working with ‘Sustain- Talk’ and ‘Discord’ (Formerly known as ‘resistance’)
  • Reflection and evaluation in relation to your own practice

There will be a mix of small and large group exercises, video and trainer demonstration.

Refreshments will be provided, please bring your own lunch. There is also free parking at the rear of the building.

Trainer:

The course will be delivered by Viv Mumby who has worked in Social Care and Health settings for over 20 years.  Originally trained as a counsellor 25 years ago, Viv now specialises in delivering evidence-based behaviour change training and offering coaching support and supervision to teams. She was trained in MI by the originators of the approach over 15 years ago. She is currently undertaking an MSc in Positive Psychology – the science of happiness!
