Dry January is a well-known annual campaign that challenges people to ditch the drink for a month. It’s done partly to get people talking about the effects of alcohol on themselves and society, and partly so that those involved can enjoy the health benefits of avoiding alcohol for 31 days.

It’s been a big success, with 1 in 6 Britons joining in last year. And it really does make a difference to your health – Alcohol Concern have the science to prove it.

Now those who are taking part in Dry January 2017 have a new way to make their efforts go further – you can use the campaign to raise money for both Alcohol Concern and NewLink Wales at the same time.

So how does it work?

In 2017, supporters can choose to split any money they raise from a sponsored Dry January between Alcohol Concern and a charity partner of their choice, including NewLink Wales.

To do so, simply sign up for Dry January at dryjanuary.org.uk. During the sign-up process, you’ll be asked if you want to raise money for both Alcohol Concern and your favourite charity. If you do, you’ll be able to select NewLink Wales from the list of available charities, and you’ll also have a fundraising automatically created for you to share with friends, family and colleagues.

Let us know that you’re supporting us for Dry January – drop us an e-mail – and we’ll keep an eye on your progress on social media and help you get the word out there.

Why are NewLink Wales supporting Dry January?

Because we believe in the idea. Because we’ve often worked with or alongside people whose lives have been affected by alcohol addiction. And because we know that raising awareness through campaigns like this will help people look more closely at their own relationship with alcohol, something that can be overlooked in a society where frequent drinking is often considered par for the course.

(Alcohol Concern have come up with a handy Impact Calculator to help show the units, costs and calorie count of how much you drink in a week, and the total over a month)

Dry January is a great way for us to get the message out there about the work that we do supporting people who’ve struggled with alcohol addiction or other substance misuse issues – and in 2017, it’s also a great way for people to support us, helping us keep our services running so we can continue to have a positive impact on people’s lives.

Thank you.
