Course Specification/Contents:
The course will cover what anabolic steroids are, history of development,
clinical use and legal status. It will look at specific anabolic steroids,
how and why anabolic steroids differ from each other and the ancillary
drugs used with them. Other PIEDs are examined depending on the needs
of the participant group and time available. There will be an examination
of how anabolic steroids are used and their effects and side effects.
Finally the course will look at what harm reduction measures and services
are appropriate for PIED users and how best to implement them.
By the end of the course participants will:
1. Have a deeper understanding of the social context and history of recreational
anabolic steroid and other PIEDs use as well as their legal status
2. Understand the basic pharmacology of anabolic steroids and other PIEDs
3. Have an understanding of how anabolic steroids and other PIEDs are
used and by whom
4. Understand the effects and side-effects of anabolic steroids and other
PIEDs
5. Be able to identify risks associated with anabolic steroid and other
PIEDs and to discuss appropriate harm reduction measures
6. Understand the practical issues in providing services for PIED users
and how they can be overcome.

Martin Chandler has managed the Inter Agency Drug Misuse Database at
the Centre for Public Health in Liverpool John Moores University (UK)
since July 2004, monitoring service activity in needle exchanges across
Cheshire & Merseyside.
