for Domestic Abuse Workers

Target Group:
Level 3 - this course is aimed at people
with a good understanding of domestic abuse, but with little knowledge
of substance misuse
Course Specification/Contents:
1. The main categories of drugs and their effects
2. Methods of drug use
3. Basic outline around drugs and the law and its impact within refuges
4. How substance misuse can affect an abusive relationship
5. Impact on children who live within a family within domestic abuse and
substance misuse issues
6. Care pathways and the support that is available
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
1.Describe the effects and risks of commonly misused drugs
2.List the main methods of drug use and describe some harm reduction techniques
3.Describe the impact that substance misuse has to individuals in an abusive
relationship
4.Recognise the risks associated with individuals fleeing domestic abuse
situations where substance misuse is involved
5.Recognise the impact that co-existing parental substance misuse and
domestic abuse has on the children
6.Identify the appropriate referral route and service
