Substance Misuse Training

NewLink Wales is a voluntary sector agency that has as part of its central remit the provision of training on matters relating to substance misuse. Training is delivered through an annual programme of courses, in-house training and training towards qualifications.

Course Prices, Discounts & Training Vouchers

Course prices are shown under the individual course descriptions. Individuals are charged the same rate as voluntary organisations.

Current members of NewLink Wales can claim a 5% discount on all our training. To find out more about becoming a member, please contact us.

We also offer a 10% discount on programmed course fees (other than Auricular Acupuncture) when a booking form is received six weeks before the course date. Unfortunately we cannot offer the member's discount on top of this.

If you as an individual or organisation have additional training needs, please let us know and we will try to meet them, resources permitting.

Target Groups/Course Levels

The target group levels in the course descriptions refer to ACMD (Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs) levels:

Level 1	Basic substance misuse awareness courses for those with little or no relevant knowledge
Level 2	Courses for staff with specific involvement in substance misuse, e.g. social workers, probation officers; these courses often cover some Level 1 information as well
Level 3	Courses for specialist substance misuse staff

To enrol on any course, please read our terms and conditions and complete the booking form. You will be sent confirmation of your place when we receive your completed form.

Unless we notify you differently, all training is held at NewLink Wales’ offices in Cardiff.

NewLink Wales’ Trainers

Deborah Woodroffe is NewLink Wales’ Director of Training. She has worked for over nineteen years in the substance misuse field and her training experience includes the development of training modules, training delivery and social work practice assessment. She is a registered social worker and is qualified both as an NVQ assessor and social work assessor.

Phil Coles and Charlotte Wilkins are the NewLink Wales Training Officers. Previously Phil was an Outreach Development Worker for the Community Drug Team and has worked on H.I.V. prevention and safer drug use with male and female sex workers. Phil also spent eight years as a development co-ordinator for a charity which helps marginalized young people gain self-esteem and confidence. He is a qualified NVQ assessor and is training to support basic skills.

Charlotte's training experience comes from ten years of mentoring, coaching and developing training programmes within the substance misuse field. She is currently undertaking a Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education and Training).

Our external trainers are chosen because they are pre-eminent in their fields or because they are currently working on projects that give immediate relevance to the training.

Individual Learning Accounts

NewLink Wales is a provider of courses registered by DCELLS, enabling participants to access resources through Individual Learning Accounts. These allow for the payment of course fees up to the value of £200. The main conditions to access this funding are that the recipients are on specified benefits or do not have qualifications above a certain level.

National Occupational Standards

Our courses are mapped to units within the National Occupational Standards. If you would like to discuss any issues around these emerging qualifications please contact the Director of Training.

Accreditation

NewLink Wales’ basic substance misuse awareness courses and volunteer training are accredited by University of Wales College Newport. This means that a credit can be gained (5 credit accumulation transfer points at Level 3) if the student completes the required attendance plus home study and written work (50 hours work in total). We feels that this accreditation provides both a general quality standard and a particular indication of value for those trainees who wish to use our training as part of career progression.
